Taxi then Processor or Processor then Taxi?

So... I have always been a meat hunter. This year I have my eye on an old 6 point and would like him mounted. After the shot, and field dress, do you take him straight to the taxi, or let processor skin him? I am not the greatest at skinning deer, and have no idea how to skin one for a shoulder mount. I realize I must sound pretty bad, but my opportunities have always been friends letting me hunt on their place for does.. Until this year ...

I would ask the taxidermist you plan on using what they prefer.

I have only had one deer shoulder mounted, but I took him to the processor and he caped him out for me and kept the head in the freezer till my meat was ready so I only had to make one trip. I think they charged $10 or so to do it.

        Hope you get him

I cape mine out at camp then head to the processor and let him copy the tag. Tag stays with the horns.

Call your processor ahead of time and ask if he will cape your deer for mounting. I've never asked that question but assume they will do this for you.

        Good Luck

I usually go to the taxi and then over to the processor.

Take him to the processor first
They'll need proof of sex and tag

Before that there's a thread on here about how to cape a deer for a shoulder mount. Several taxis give very good advice in that thread.
I think it's called "so your going to shoulder mount your deer"
I'm on my phone otherwise I'd search and copy a link here

The Taxi can/will give you a form to take with the tag to the processor if you go to the taxi first

If you can field dress the deer, you can surely skin it and take the parts to their respective places.

Just remember, when you field dress is, DO NOT cut the belly skin any further forward than the sternum.

Here's the thread Sparkles was talking about.
