Need info on Kansas pheasant hunt

Looking to go to Kansas this year. Who is a good guide with wild birds?

    #2
Kansas has been very tough for pheasants. The SW part if the state would be the area to go for wild birds, but it is still slow hunting. I don't pheasant hunt, but my friends that do day say they have had great luck on wild birds in South Dakota.

Might be something in the Wichita Eagle newspaper on line.
Some outfitters may be listed on the KDWP web site.

Haven't heard what kind of bird crop Ks had this year, but last year the drought took a toll on the birds. The whole time I was up there last year, I only heard one rooster cackle while on my deer stand.
I hunted with this one outfitter years ago right outside of Greensburg, Haviland I think is the name of the town. Don't know if he's still in the business, but we had a great hunt and at a very reasonable price. Can't remember his name. Probably could call Greensburg Chamber of Commerce and see who they have on their list.
Or you can contact Call of the Wild Outfitters, out of Stafford. Jim Call 620-727-1444. This man will show you a good hunt. Just tell him Lenney sent ya. Might make you a real good deal!!!

KDWP web site has the pheasant population down 30% due to drought and lack of seasonal cover.
Should be able to limit out anyway.

Save gas and go to the panhandle. Olton, Earth, Muleshoe....limit is still 3.

We did alot of walking on prime pheasant ground last deer season, and we walk alot !! Jumped very few birds, the one spot we did have a few we sent a father and his 2 sons during youth pheasant. Would be tough for an outfitter to have much faith in wild only there, drought in area we were in has taken a toll on everything, deer included. This was up by Luray, Kansas.

Look up around Cawker City and Downs. It is about 2 counties south of Nebraska state line in the middle of the state. There is a lot of public land up there but you need dogs as the birds get a lot of pressure put on them and get smart quickly. There is a guy there in Cawker City who is a great guide but I can't remember his name but he has several trailer houses that he uses for lodging whether you use him as a guide or not. He is right off of main hwy going through Cawker City.

Just don't offer him a crown kamakazie while playing poker. Lol

Im pretty sure we stayed a few night with that guy last year. He would be out in his shop when we headed out to hunt before daylight drinking beer. Would still be there when we came in at night.

I read the bird reports and the crow counts this year in all of kansas is the lowest since they started counts in 1957. We seen a few birds while driving north of cawker city and glen elder, but not enought I would drive up there to hunt.

I stopped going about 7-8 years ago it was decent hunting back then and we would go for a week. Some of the smaller walk in areas that were away from the main public land could be great hunting at times and you could come home with a limit but hunting around that lake is really tough in some areas. One of the guys I used to go with now goes on up to South Dakota and does pretty good and it is all crp grass fields that are knee high and much more pleasant and easier to hunt.
