This actually happened last year, but with some of the recent threads about rattlesnakes, figured I would share this story. Scary at the moment, but a good laugh now. A buddy and I get to the ranch on a Friday night, and of course we go straight to check a few of the trail cams. We don't even take the time to unload the truck prior to heading out. We were both in shorts and shoes, but I decided to put on my boots....just in case. So we approach the first trail cam and do the normal routine. Check the feeder, make sure it's spinning and battery is still good, then on to the trail cam to grab the SD card. I approach the tree first and begin to undo the straps on the camera so we can get to the SD card. A few secs later, my buddy also approaches the tree. We both squat down at the base of the tree and I hear what I thought was a rattle. I look around the tree and shine my head lamp where I heard the noise, and sure enough, it's a 5ft rattlesnake coiled up with its head lifted and in a strike position. I yelled snake and startled my buddy who replies with, "man - that's not funny - don't do that sh**!" He quickly realized that I wasn't joking and we were very lucky to not have been struck by that snake. I approached the left side of the tree, my buddy approached the front per the camera angle and this rattlesnake was 2ft from the tree on the right side. Had we approached that tree differently, we would have surely stepped right on the snake. Scary moment, but funny that the trail cam caught the action....as that was our original purpose in being there. Needless to say, that was the first - and last - trail cam we check that night. Sequence of events. Enjoy! Ha!
