Stolen trail camera at Hagerman NWR

I work at Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge. We use trail cameras to monitor many different things on the refuge. In this case the camera was monitoring hog movement in the Big Mineral Unit. It was stolen by a scouter this past weekend. Here is the deal. He took camera #1 and missed camera #2. We know who he is and where he lives, but feeling generous, we are giving him the chance to bring us the camera without penalty. If not, and he shows up at his segment hunt at the refuge, we will arrest him on the spot and he will be charged for theft of government property.

are cameras allowed by scouters on the property (other than employees)?

if not is there any chance the person was scouting and saw the camera and took it down and had plans on turning it into the authorities at the unit and reporting the illegal use of a scouting camera?

Not sure you want to admit this in public. JK

I hope they do the right thing and turn it back in. But they should arrested either way. That way they learn the lesson JMO

                        He deserves arrest.

Very nice offer letting him walk if he returns it.

then I would say there is a chance that the scouter thought he had stumbled upon something illegal and decided to take it to the authorities but might not have made it to them quite yet. Either way I would think the intent would need to be researched before throwing someone in jail.

I can tell you that if I was hunting public land that was not supposed to have trail cameras in use on the premises and I came across one I would snag it in a heartbeat and take it to someone in charge and explain to them where I got it from. I HOPE this is what has happened and that it was not "stolen"
