RR, you are right. A "good" taxidermist will treat their clients mount like their own but like I said theres too many that don't. So if the OP's doesn't I suggest finding another. Again, the fact that he is on here asking what to do tells me that the taxi basically said "sorry but it's not my fault, deal with it". Not cool!
And if you're going to replace the hide why not replace the horns. Either way it's not your animal. Jmo though. I know a lot of folks don't feel that way but that's my take.

I hate using replacement capes. It's a last resort for me. Nothing fits like the original and every animal is different. This is one reason I started tanning my own years ago. To most tanneries a cape is a cape. They are not the one mounting it. I do agree with Cuz that some taxidermists do not care. Pull one out of the freezer and go. It's shows in their work though. And you do get what you pay for

Doesn't the taxi bare some of the responsibility of the tanning since he's picking the tannery?
I see it being the customers fault if he handles all of the tanning process and drops it off tanned.
It seems that since the taxi picks the tannery then he sort of endorses the tannery. If he doesn't feel like they are trust worthy then he should change tanneries. I'm I viewing this wrong?

That is why I do my own tanning. Takes out the middle man. With that being said I still do not take 100% responsibility due to the main variable out of my control. Field care. This is the cause of most slippage problems.

UPDATE!!! The Taxi came thru and found a suitable replacement cape. Its not the original, but a very close likely hood to the animal that was taken. He was very sorry for the incident and apologized for it over and over. It took him just a few days and he followed up as promised. I'm very pleased with his response at this point. Thank you to all of you for your valuable input.
