    Hunting Around Mineral Wells

Me and my son have been invited by friends to hunt some of their family property outside of Mineral Wells on the weekend of November 16th. I'm not sure exactly what road this place is off of and I have never hunted up that way before. I was just wondering what to expect as far as deer numbers and quality up that way. I know answers will vary but was just wanting to get a general idea. Thanks!!

Generally, not a high population and a 130" is realistic, but much bigger is possible.

Lots of cedar, tons of cover for the deer. There are good deer out there, but they are pretty smart. We never had a ton of deer on our place, but they were there. I always had much more luck walking around instead of sitting on a feeder. Only problem is there's so much thick scrub they can hide and bed down in, and you can't shoot a bow through it, let alone move quietly through it, it can be a real tough hunt.

But if sitting feeders is your thing...you'll probably see something one out of four sits, but the good bucks never came to our feeders.

Thanks for the feed back. This will be a rifle hunt for my son. I'm just ready to see some new country and share a campfire with some friends. From what I hear, the terrain is rolling with mainly mesquite?

Depends on what area you are in Johnny. Some areas are choked with cedar while others are oaks and mesquite. Terrain could be anything from flat to fairly steep hills. Oh, and one last note............
Lots of artifacts to be found in parts of that country!!!!!!!!!

If you have lots of oaks and it is a heavy acorn crop, it will probably be a long blank sit at the feeders.

There are some good deer in the area. I killed a 132" 8 point a couple years back on a friend's 240 acres in MW.

That area can be some beautiful country. Nov. 16 ought to be about when the rut is going so be ready for that. I've found quite a few arrowheads in Palo Pinto County over the years so be looking. Good luck!

I was already thinking that of course and will spend my down time stomping around a bit.

I got a message out now asking about the terrain and types of trees that are on the place. I know it is 300 acres and they have a few feeders up and running with stands on them. That's really all I know. Not sure exactly where outside of MW it is located either. I will find this out soon.

We have our lease sandwiched between the State park and the base there right off Grimes Rd. We have decnet deer herd for 200 acres and the best buck we have on our place will go high 120's to low 130's. The weekend of the 16th will be prime time for the rut action going on. The bucks are hard hunting on our place mostly we see them within 20 minutes of sun rise moving to bedding or about 15-20 minutes before legal hunting light fades. Right now we are still getting pictures of bucks during the day time, but that will change as soon as the 1st shot rings out. I will be down there with my brother that weekend hunting.

Our place is pretty cool as it use to be the bomb range for the base out there and we have shell fragments all of the place.

Friend of mine lived near garner on land that was next to army land and close to the park. Lots of deer out there.
