Close call. Check your treestand straps.

I was in a rush to get on the stand yesterday afternoon after leaving work. I decided to hunt a stand closer to my house that I haven't hunted since last year. I usually change all the straps on my stands before hunting season but had not been to this stand yet. After parking and a fast walk to my stand I climbed into the lock on stand and settled in at around 5:30. There were a few limbs that had grown out since last season and I was able to stand and break them off from the stand. I didn't see any deer while hunting and ended up getting down at around 7:15. I lowered my bow down and climbed down the ladder stick. I always clip my pull up rope to the ladder when I am done hunting so that it is not blowing in the wind and spooking deer. On the ground after removing my bow I went to clip the rope on the ladder stick but it was hung on a small limb. I gave the rope a little jerk to pull it out of the limb and down comes the stand!!! The ratchet strap that I had securing the stand to the tree had torn in half. It looked like it was weather rotted in that spot. I still can't figure out how it didn't fall when I was sitting in it and standing on it. The stand is 25' in the air, and I was not wearing and do not own a harness. I was extremely lucky! I figure this was God's way of warning me so I will be buying a harness today. I just thought I would share my stupidity with everyone so that it might help prevent someone else from having an accident.

P.S. If something like this happens to you, do not tell your wife about it. She will definitely let you know how stupid you are.

General rule is not to leave them up more than a couple of weeks, and readjust often. Squirrels, rats chew them, and trees grow.

Harness and lifeline. 100% tied off from the time I leave the ground till I step back on the ground. Only way to go.

I like the stands with a chain and straps. Those pesky squirrels can't chew that!

                      Glad your ok brother.

Glad you dodged that bullet! I once stepped from my top screw-in step to the platform and the whole thing gave way. Some critter had chewed almost completely through the strap and just a little weight on the platform broke it. Luckily I still had one foot on a step and one hand on a branch. After I climbed down I had to sit at the base of the tree for a while to regain my composure....

I dont use any straps on my tree stand for that reason.

I have several of the Screaming Eagle Stands made in Montana. No straps. STEEL
