Had a big buck look at the feeder from across the fence some 100 yards away. Three does were under the feeder he turned and walked back in the woods hit the can call he came back to the fence for another look, turned around and walked away again. Hit the can call again he came back jumped the fence and came into the feeder with the does. This was late December about six years ago. That's the only big buck I've had any luck with. About half the time I use it I call in does no matter what time of season.
Years ago I was hunting in Nebraska and had a mature buck cruising by at 100-150 yards. I used one of the primos bleat cans and he came in to 15 yards. Killed that buck and then another bigger buck about 5 minutes later. Only time I had it work but haven't used them very much.
The times that I have had them work is when I get busted and deer start blowing. I bust out the bleat and it seems to calm them down and they come in. I have never had any luck calling with a bleat blind. I have had lots of luck with a 3 grunt sequence however. Never have tried a snort wheeze.
I have had quite a bit of luck with the can call over the years, and after analyzing my experiences with it, I've concluded that the most of it occurred during Thanksgiving week time period, mostly in real remote areas of National Forests, and with 3 1/2 year old bucks. This is a time period when I do a lot of "stalking around", which is my favorite thing to do. Never had a real mature buck come in, but I may have not have been near one. My thought is that it is good in this scenario because it's just after the peak rut, the deer densities in these are fairly low, with most of the deer in "pockets" of habitat in big woods environment, these bucks are lonely. I think the can call sounds more like a fawn, and these 3 1/2 year old bucks are looking for the mama doe.
So, this time of year and into the prime rut, I have had next to no luck with the can call.
Yep. I sure have. They've worked well for me when calling a buck from across open fields. I've not had much luck using one when I'm in thick brushy areas, for some reason, but I've definitely had good luck hunting oat patches. It's not fool proof, by any means. You've got to get the right buck that's on the hunt. If I see a buck and I use it, he has to respond right away and start coming; or I'll quit using it. If he starts coming, then I'll continue. It's a tool to try but not one to count on. Just like rattling horns and grunt calls. Although they work more regularly.
Ok I'll expand on my comment! Lol! I've only been able to call in bucks that are actively searching for does with the Can, but that is the purpose of the product right? A buck is not going to come in if he's not in the mood
Yup! Buck roar and bleat can combo. Called in a buck 150-200 yards away with the buck roar and he was gunna skirt me. Changed the calling up and tried to make it sound like a buck chasing a doe with the doe bleating maybe twice. Came right by 40 yards. Shot right under him!!!
