most people don't realize that the fall garden is better than one in the spring. its cooler, usually less bugs, more rain and in most cases there is no hail to beat your garden down just when it gets growing good.

As they ripen, they quickly become big red bullseyes for birds and varmints!

Just the other day, I witnessed a mockingbird feasting on all the ripe red chile pequin peppers on one of my plants.

When I pick them green, I preempt my animal competitors and ensure a better yield. The countertop ripening still results in fantastic sweetness too.

I'm going to make some salsa verde and fried 'maters, along with some wild game chile rellenos!

When do you typically plant a fall garden?

I usually start them in late august

Then in November I start my winter leafy greens for yummy salads in the cold months, and 50-60 heads of garlic for harvesting the following June

My jalapenos were nice and hot but they sure didn't grow past 2.5". It was almost like they were stunted. I made some killer pickled peppers this week.

I have recently learned from my garden that when this happens to me, it is most often due to insufficient soil nutrients.
