What can I say, I love this spot. Special thanks to my husband for using his last birthday gift, Hooeyman Saw, to clean up the shooting lanes & climbing tree.
I packed in a 1/2 mile so my vehicle is far way. I'm up 30 ft in my summit climber on the back ridge of a pond that opens up into cattle grazing behind me. In front of me I have about 70 yards of beautiful opened up forest (read: have actual shoot thru lanes, rare for us in the big thicket area) before a 10 ft drop down gully lined with heavy palmettos. Under me is a cow trail & barb wire fence. The cows didn't come over here the last time I hunted so I'm not worried about them. Last time I got to see a yearling 3 pt & 2 yo 6 pt chasing around 3 young does. It's neat because I heard them come splashing thru the gully & crashing thru the palmettos before I saw them. We have a very early rut here where I hunt-- as in they've been rutting since this past weekend, so I'm expecting any shot to be a quick draw situation. Not really a stand where you get to watch them come in, more like you hear a faint step or 2 or a large crash & then they pop out.
I checked the camera & have a mature cull coming thru here pretty regularly. We also have a super cool deer in the area with a split brow tine-- he'd do as well. :-) But really I just want anything mature. Would love to take a big old nanny. The mature bucks have been on their feet in the AM lately, so I'm prepared to sit until noon. Ready to release an arrow & bacon wrap some backstrap!
I've got hand tossed corn & a gigantic pile of rice bran across the fence in the forest. Let's do this!!
