I just finished making an ottoman/footstool to go with a chair my wife bought. As I was covering the cushioned top with upholstery fabric I had a thought. I'd like to make another one - a more rustic version- and use a hide, either whitetail or exotic of some kind in place of the fabric. I've never worked with hides before - how would it hold up? Would the hair tend to fall out quickly leaving it patchy, or is it pretty durable?

Making stuff with deer hides?

We have used deer hide on many pieces - old rocking chairs, table chairs, foot stools, etc. It holds up well. The leather itself will hold up pretty nice, however, you will have hair loss. In my opinion though, that adds to to the rustic look. Pretty much all the hides we save now are used to cover chairs. I think you would be pleased with the outcome.
