    Lost My Mind

Looks like I have just finalized plans to fulfill a dream I have had for almost as long as I have been hunting. I have been fascinated with bighorn sheep, the country they inhabit, and the work it takes to harvest one regardless of weapon. I have been putting in for tags in Western states for a number of years trying to accumulate points or get lucky and draw a Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep Tag or Desert Bighorn tag knowing that the odds were stacked way against me and in some cases it could be 20-30 years to draw, if ever.

On a whim, I called two outfitters that guide in the Canmore Bow Zone of Alberta where there are 8 archery only tags (basically over the counter) allotted yearly to non resident bowhunters that book through an outfitter. The result was that there was one tag available for November 2016. After sleeping on it for 24 hours I made an irresponsible decision and booked it. It will impact my hunting plans drastically over the next 3 years and I may live off ramen noodles but I wanted to mark this off the bucket list while I am still single, and young enough to physically endure it safely.

So 36 months to go...lots of cold weather gear to accumulate and a whole lot of getting in shape to do. I am a bit of a gear nerd so I will likely post along the way as I prepare on what to pack. Going to be a long wait.

Good deal. Just make sure to stay single so your Bighorn money doesn't end up in a wedding fund

Way to go, you'll never regret it. For me it wasn't bighorn sheep, it was Africa with my longbow. I decided to make it happen, so... part time job, scrimping, taking lunch to work instead of going out, etc. I was married so that made it a little more difficult, fortunately she understood and was very supportive. Took 3 years to make it happen. When I got back I immediately started preparing to do it again and made it happen again 4 years later. I'm 67 now, but may go back one more time.
