    Dang, Google is getting good...

I visited Amazon this afternoon and looked at the disposable ear plugs for my company...didn't buy, just looked...I've found that it is cheaper and easier to buy a lot of my shop supplies there instead of paying someone $20 an hour to go "shopping" and pick up supplies...

anyway...I go to drudge report to check on world news before checking out and running to the ranch and the page is covered with ads for the different ear plugs I looked at...

actually pretty impressive even if a little spooky.

That's why I am very careful about links I click on, especially far far goofy right wing stuff talking about secession/rebellion, etc....I'm sure the NSA has much better software than google...

You can surf pages where the history appears from a 3rd party and they can't track it.

I was looking at an mma forum not long ago and one of the members complained he kept getting ads on the homepage for a type of lifestyle he claimed wasn't "how he rolled". He caught a lot of flack from other members once he figured out those ads are generated from browsing history. I have to agree with your statement that it is impressive and spooky.

Yep. Google knows everything about you. Where you live, what web pages you look at, what you eat for breakfast, everything. Your email is also scanned. Send me a couple of emails about playing tennis this weekend, and you'll start seeing ads for tennis rackets. I don't know about you, but I'm getting VERY tired of being a corporate marketing tool.

Amen, there are steps to opt out of some of the targeted ads, it works to a certain extent but they still get all your info.

That's what I like about Mac and Safari. I can opt for Private Browsing. Click on settings to block things like that. PC is too easy for. Google to do pop up ad on more than Mac. Sorry ure dealing with it. I don't miss PC!

It is kinda spooky. The first time it happened to me I thought it was a coincidence. I went to a news website and all the ads looked familiar - "hey, those are the exact flies I was looking at earliier on a fly fishing site" what are thae chances? ... Hey, wait a minute..THEY ARE TRACKING ME!" a reminder to be careful out there in cyberspace...

It's cool, in a way; but it's WAY scary that people are out there able to monitor our activities online.

If you use a Mac and Safari, at least use it for the right reason, not because you are mis-informed. They are good machines if used for the right purpose.

I have In Private Browsing, Tracking protection, and SmartScreen protection in my internet explorer on my laptop. I also have the ability to turn my internet protection level up to high, not download cookies, etc. on internet explorer. I also have a WHOLE LOT more tools that I can use to protect myself than do on the Mac. It's not just IE either, Safari and Chrome has the same capabilities. I am using IE10 for this example since people think IE is further behind Chrome and FF in it's capabilities.

That said, most of the sites just look at the cookies from the previous site. Try this, go to Amazon and look at something again. Go to another site like google.com then clear your cache and delete your internet history and cookies. Close your browser and restart it. Go to the drudge report and see if that happens again.

It's not just via web browsers...they do the same crap with Android phones.

This is a post I made in June on the subject

Here is my little slice of unauthorized information sharing story.

Some time last week, I was using google's chat feature inside Gmail, talking to my Son about the prospect of his fiance` finding a job... I mentioned to him that the daughter of a friend of my Wife, was bringing home $100/night in tips from Chili's, and maybe she should apply...(simple enough)

Saturday, a friend and I were on the way back from the golf course and decided to take a trip into SA to go to Golfsmith. I had heard of this golf glove I wanted to remember to look for, the "Bionic" glove... SO, not wanting to forget, I pulled up the basic, memo app on my phone and made the entry you see below...again, a simple note/memo app, not "cloud based" like Evernote or similar.

Today, log in to Facebook, and as I start to scroll through the usual, I noticed something in the right side pane where they always put ads... see screen shot below.

I keep having ads pop up in drudge and other websites for chinese brides and I for the life of me don't recall ever searching for that?

Look at your settings in your mobile browser. You should be able to turn off saving/sending history, cookies, saving files, etc. For example I have the following in my windows phone:

                            checkboxes to turn on/off:
                            - Send browsing history to Microsoft to help improve Bing services
                            - Use SmartScreen Filter to help protect against unsafe websites
                            - Send a Do Not Track request to websites you visit
                            - Allow sites to store files on my phone

dropdown to choose from: Choices are Allow All, Block Some, Block All
                            - Cookies from websites and apps:
