Got to hate going to a WMA to try to get a standby on an archery only hunt that clearly states (longbow, recurve or compound) are the only weapons allowed on this hunt, and you get there and they say there are 8 spots for crossbows and 3 for compound. WTH? When I asked I was told it was for a 'study' on wounding rates. Can't you compare that when you have the crossbow only hunt? Which by the way you can't standby with a compound, go figure.

This is the 3rd year they have been running that study. I just checked and it does not say in the current Public Hunting draw book but it seems like in the past it said something about a study and crossbow hunts running concurrent with traditional type gear (longbows, recurves and compound)

          Which hunt were you on?
In the draw book it looks like Big Lake, GE, Chap, Richland and Nannie Stringfellow are the "study" areas

You went on a WMA hunt that had the same dates for x-bow as well as "regular" bow. There are 4 or 5 of them. Richland Creek is one of them. In the past, that place might, for example, have 60 permits for the archery hunt. When x-bows became legal in archery season, they ended up splitting the permits. 30 for bows and 30 for x-bows and the hunt dates are all the same.
This is the reason I don't even apply for those places anymore!!

Richland is where I was and no I wasn't drawn, 5 of us left over. It pays to take both types of bows cause you can put in twice for the standby. will do that next time.
