Public land: How far from another stand?

    Hypothetical:

You scout public land for months. You find a perfect climbing tree and mark it on your GPS. Hunt morning comes and you find someone else in your tree or in a tree about 20 yards away.

Do you back all the way out? Do you find another tree on the same trail and how far away do you go?

I've only had this problem duck hunting.

You should scout multiple locations in each area you plan to hunt just in case.... I always have a few trees marked with good separation between them.

I would back track several hundred yds or resort to stand B option

If it is archery only I say a good rule of thumb is 100 yards between stands. That gives each hunter a 50 yard shot without getting into the other hunters area. Typically 50 yards is further than most people will shoot with a bow anyways.

Get there very early set stand in tree next to other stand. When it gets daylight quietly lean over and say "psssst .... You seein anything ?"

If I found someone in my area first then at a minimum I wouldn't set up closer than 200yds and probably try for 300+...

This is one of the many frustrations with public land hunting. Or someone wanting to hunt in the tree next to you.

On public land always have a plan B and be out early enough to get to B before shooting time.

If you get a good way off of the road you should not have much company anyway

I would laugh my butt off if that happened to me.

I'll quietly take a dump 20 yards upwind and then find another tree.

I have a plan B and a plan C. Been scouting for a month now and have spots for either wind direction or other hunters in the area. I would back out. I wouldn't set up anywhere near as one of you will likely be scenting the other and I don't think either would have success. 200 or 300 yds from a spot I know someone else is at is about as close as I would set up

Have multiple locations. If you found the "perfect" climbing tree, chances are somebody else has too.
