If you're going to make you're own soundboard as opposed to using an insert I would sure get a generic jig off eBay. I wasted a lot of wood trying to freehand. It's a lot of work even with the jig, but the reward is worth it.
Also this book has valuable information

The lathe was always one of my favorites as a kid and in HS shop, and it's about the only tool I haven't had since. It was nice seeing your handiwork take shape on the fast-spin.

Good luck, never made a duck call.

        Trial and error....
I have a few jigs that get me close and now eye the final shape of soundboard.

Interesting. I had never really thoght of making a duck call. I had always just done like I was brought up to do. Put my forearm up to my mouth and make sort of a sucking sound. Takes some practice, but you can make it sound like most anythng you want. Kind of depencs on how far apart you place your lips and how hard you inhale. Works great for everything form ducks to rabbits to coyotes. Never have had much luck with deer.. They usually just ***** up theiy ears, listen once or twice and head for the hills. Still working on that one. The Chief swears that it works, I still ain't convinces.
