Sales tax get a load of this!

So years ago I had AT&T cell service through Hawk Electronics. I have not had the service since 2009. They went bankrupt this year. Today I get a letter from their parent company who says they didn't charge me enough tax over three years. They want me to pay them $46.75 in sales tax they failed to bill me for.

Now if I had a business and didn't charge my customers enough sales tax the State of Texas would tell me too bad pay up.

Actually, I think that you will pay them or the state comptroller. It stinks but I have been down that road before and it didn't matter how p.o.ed I was, the nice lady in Austin said to pay up.

The state collects from them they collect from you. It is on them to get it right the first time. You paid what was said was owed. Mistake is on them, and for them to make up shortage, not you.

This is correct. Don't pay them a dime. They are just trying to make up for their mistake and hoping you'll pay.

Yep. According to what I've been reading on the Texas comptrollers site, the responsibility is on the seller. They dont have to collect tax from you at all, but they do have to pay it to the state.

Not entirely true. They cannot make you pay, but if you get audited you will be held responsible by state.

I had service through Hawk for 12 years, and they sent me a bill 3 months after I switched my service. And they switched while I was out of the country, leaving me with no service for three days. I explained the situation to all of the debt collectors each time and finally had one call me for the second time. He told me how I was a sorry, low life, no bill paying piece and really got worked up. I laughed and told him that I had enjoyed our conversation and would appreciate it if he would call me everyday at 3 pm because it made for a good break time. Then they never called again. Guess my $90 bill put em out of business....
