Help me get my 3rd grader get to hunting.

I've decided to grant my son's wish and get him a shotgun for his birthday in October. He is 8 and shot his first turkey last spring with ClayW's 20 gauge on shooting sticks. I am looking for a youth gun for him that will eventually be used by my kindergartner. Not looking for an heirloom piece, just something affordable that will not knock him to the ground. So.....

If anyone has a youth 20 gauge they are willing to part with, please let me know what you want for it. Post here or send me a message. I'm excited to get him out shooting with me.

I was hoping to buy a decent used gun before I hit up the stores.

I just saw it. Looks like a good deal, but I'm trying to spend less. It has been pretty tight.

I bought my son a mossberg mini shot gun. Its a 410 but it fits him perfect, he'll be 8 on Tuesday. Unfortunately he won't get to hunt this year. I don't care much for mossberg but its a good little gun and didn't cost too much and they had a youth 20 at Academy.

Go ahead and get a 12. More options with it. You can get the same light loads for it as the 20 and even a lil heavier load wont hit as hard since its more dispersed. Look at the but plate on a 20 vs a 12. The 20 is more narrow and not as tall. I had a 12 and 20 wingmaster growing up. Before the 20 got stolen a couple years ago I bet it didnt have 3 boxes through it its its 20 yrs of life.

I'll try to get to an Academy to see what they have. Are their 12s that fit little guys?

Well, he shot a relative's small 20 gauge about 6 times yesterday and handled it well. One more check if anyone has a youth shotgun they are willing to sell.

My first gun was a single-shot .410. Got it for Christmas in second grade. Really had to make the first shot count. Won a turkey shoot against grown men with that tight-shooting full choke gun. Good for squirrels. Quail and ducks were a lot easier with the humpback Browning Magnum 20 semi-automatic I got about three years later. Wow! Three chances to get something! Still hunt with that 1968 Browning (interchangeable full and improved cylinder barrels). But I still have the little .410. Still give my Dad a report when I go hunting. He's 82 and likes to hear about the hunt even though he can't get afield anymore. Hope your son will tell you his hunting stories when you can't get out anymore.
