    Germination Question

How long will seed oats or rye grass seeds last stored in plastic containers where they have been repeatedly heated and cooled due to temp fluctuations? Will they still grow after being planted , or will the just be like a steamed oat and not grow? We have access to some that was left over from last year and want to plant it, but if it's not worth my time I don't want to mess with it. Any advice is appreciated ! Thanks, Jason

according to biologist, deer only eat rye grass if nothing else to eat. but the oats can be planted but I would double seed with new winter oats.

The easiest thing is to do a germination test. count out 100 seeds. place them in a a couple of wet paper towels and then into a plastic bag that zip almost all the way closed. Leave them on the counter for 3-10 days and make sure the paper towels to not dry out. Then, when they sprout you can count the number that sprouted and have a %of germination from the 100..

That will tell you the fastest..

Were the seeds protected from insects? I would be more worried about insect damage than the heating/cooling they went through.

Yes they were stored in the bags, inside of sealed plastic containers.

I would think you would lose some germ if the temps are really high/low, but probably not a huge problem. I'd still plant it. May not notice a difference at all.
Edit: just saw it was from last year. If it was mine I'd plant it and not be worried at all.
