Having a debate in the office about killing cotton tails and eating them. I say you can kill and eat them any time of year. Others are saying only after the first freez.
What say you and why?
I have heard that you only want to eat them when it is cold. Something about them carrying some disease throughout the rest of the year, when it is hot.
I dont know for sure, but just what I have been told.
one can eat rabbit 12 months out of the year. What is it that changes on May1 and goes away on Sept 1???
I had a wildlife professor in college tell me one could not eat deer meat in the summer, it was inedible. I have no idea where he got that wrong idea from.

It's an old wives tale. Is there a difference in a rabbit from August 31 to September 1? No...but September has an "R" in it so the rabbit must be good to eat, right? Makes no sense.
I think this started due to the correlation with more fleas and parasites on the rabbits during the warmer months, hence the "first freeze" talk. However, the rabbit's core temperature is constant all year.
Only in months that end in R? Sounds like the rule for raw oysters. But that is only because they are raw. You can eat cooked oysters any time of the year. Why couldn't you eat meat that was processed properly and cooked? I'm no biologist or doctor, but it just doesn't add up to me...
