    Redbone Hound for tracking????

Got a chance to get a redbone pup. If I get it I want to train it for blood trailing and human scent tracking(lost kids). Has anybody used one for this or trained on before. I have always had Heelers or Blk mouth Cur dogs in the past and trained them for cattle work and have also worked with Rotties and Sheps for protection work many years ago.

Just need some input on this redbone before I pull the trigger.

    Thanks
    Chris

The only experience I've had with them were coon/cat guys, they like to travel, as in a couple of miles travel. Get you a good tracking collar.

My greatgrandfather was the dog handler for the Huntsville Prison system back in the day. He bred a mix of Redbone (for their noses) and black mouth cur (for their grit) to hunt down escaped convicts and they were some awesome dogs. Wish I could find some dogs from that line now. Would love to try them out on hogs.

The only training you'll have to do with a redbone is just put it on blood. He will show you how to track. They are VERY WIDE ranging dogs so you might want to trail him on a lead. Growing up we always had one for cold trailing... hard to beat their nose.

I used to have one and that dog was a beast when it came to tracking. Took a year old hide and drug it through creeks and suck for about 1/2 mile just to see what he was capable of and he never lost the scent once. RIP Cooter you were a great dog.

Guess I will be saving blood and hides this year. Also guess I need to start looking into what I need to do to start training for all this. Hopefully next year there will be a new blood dog in the east Texas area to use.

I do think I will get a female so if I decide to mix some Blk mouth cur or even something a little more aggressive I can for a new generation.

If you want an aggressive hound get a plott. Your redbone will be fine for you. Just remember its a hound and it will track. You will need a good handle on him or her if not you may not see the dog again after first hunt. They like to hunt. They will trash. That's my opinion.

I plan on using a long lead when tracking.
