    Crossbow reviews for a friend

A buddy of mine has two bad shoulders and is wanting to try hunting with a crossbow. He knows I'm an avid archer and ask me to look into crossbows for him. However I don't have any experience with them. So I'm turning to the GS for advise.

He is on a budget probably 5-600 for a package. So what would you guys recommend?

A guy just posted an Excalibur for 600. I would get that one.

Tenpoint Titan Extreme with the Acudraw system.

About 800 but I promise its worth the extra. The Acudraw is the best cranking system IMO. Perfect for shoulder problems. Gander Mountain 799 for the package. I think you can get a 50 gift card with purchase. I got a 100 card with purchase a while back.

Site it in at 30 on second line. You will be on perfect for the 1st line at 20 and the 3rd line at 40.

      Lifetime warranty on Tenpoints.

I wished I would have got this one the first time. Wasted my money on a more expensive crossbow that had issues. The crank was very hard to use and eventually broke.

Tenpoints are very good and I would probably ha e one except for the fact if I want to change a string, I can't without a press. Wicked Ridge is a good inexpensive one made by Tenpoint.

I just bought a Barnett Ghost 350 package and it is great. it is balanced nicely it is light but not to light feels like gun in your hand. The scope that came with it is clear and easy to sight in. I have shot it 25-50 times now and really like it. Only thing is it is a bear to load even with a cocking rope.

I bought it form my son to use this archery season He cannot pull 40lbs yet. He is very deadly with it.

Must get the Ten point with Accudraw. Well worth the money and just as fast at 40 yards as 20. Spend the money the 1st time and you will never have to do it again. Last year i bought a middle of the line Xforce-350 for about $400 and it did it's job but this year upgraded to the Ten Point that shoots 400 plus FPS and let's just say i would of saved $300 spening $1000. good luck.

Excalibur for maintenance by far. disadvantages stated by some are trigger pull with and weight.

I have the 10 point turbo XLT 2. reason I have the two is Cabelas screwed up the 1 I love how narrow this thing is as well as the trigger pull. you can Robin Hood bolts all day long with it. downside is you gotta live close to the boat shop to change the strings.most the time you have to order the strings yourself which are not cheap and to invest in a press to do it yourself you better plan on holding on to the same for a while.

the Matthew stryker has had positive results everywhere. ranked number 1 by field and stream and many on here have a man recommend them. I have not yet had the pleasure of seeing one but when the time comes I definitely will pull the trigger on one.

the optics go get a hawke scope. but in the last 2 years there's been some other pretty darn good scopes come out. just be aware of not paying for the name eg Leopold.

I did a bunch of research on 'em, and after weighing everything, I ordered an Excalibur Matirx 380 Blackout all rigged out with their top of the line new scope and the Easton Diablo bolts. It's kinda pricey, but there's essentially nothing else to buy to rig it out. It's ready to go hunting. It's simple to use and maintain. Strings are cheap, and easily changed in the field in less than a minute... One thing to keep in mind with these high performance crossbows is that the strings (and cables if it's a compound) are high maintenance and must be replaced regularly. They are NOT like a regular bow that you might get thousands of shots out of a set of strings/cables... Crossbows are more like a couple hundred shots... Last thing I want is to be 2 days into a 5 to 10 day hunt in the middle of nowhere and have to get back to town to replace a string/cable...
