    Machinist questions

Reading another thread earlier I realized there a several on here so I have some questions. I have a project I am considering. It involves 2 different pieces that would need to be machined/fabricated. 1 is basically an extra long lug nut about 2" long. The other is a bolt with a flat plate on the head. The bolt could be done with someone with the proper welding. I guess my main question could the nut be done in small quantities, 50 or so at a time. Without breaking the bank. It could also involve several different sizes and threads. maybe 50 of each at a time.

I guess it depends on what "breaking the bank" is. They should be able to be done fairly inexpensively in qty's of 50. A major cost in machining parts is the setup time, once its setup the cost per part goes down because the costs are spread out over the entire order. In other words ( these numbers a completely unrelated to you part ) 1pc may cost $50ea but 10pcs may cost $30ea and 100pcs may be $12. As far as your parts are concerned the cost will depend on many factors including material, tolerances, whether the hex will have to be milled or can be bought already on size etc.

You may be able to use allthread nuts. They come in all sizes and are about four times longer than regular nuts as they are for splicing all thread rod together. I use them for the swivel on my deer stand seats.

          Or......

If anyone has access to a lathe, you can make either or both pieces out of hex stock, then drill and tap the threads required.

Come up with a drawing and find a small shop near you with a good reputation and they will be happy to quote it.

Send me drawings with material and all dimensions. Kevin.latham@campbellgrinding.com. I will be able to look at it next week and get you some pricing. We are a job shop so most of our jobs are small quantity.

I am working on rough drawings. Getting ready for this weekend is getting in the way. As soon as I have rough drawings I will get with several of you. Right now I am just looking at estimates to gauge the feasibility of this project.
