    Broadhead size?

I was reading another thread and it got me to thinking. What is the lowest # you would use to shoot a 100gr 3 blade bh? My kids will be using a bow to hunt for the first time this year and shoot 35# and 45#. Do I need to get them 2 blades?

Compound bow? Arrow speed? In my opinion, a 2 blade cut on contact head will out-penetrate pretty much any 3 blade. I would bet that a good 3 blade will work with their setups but why not just use 2 blades to play it safe?

I started out hunting with a 45 lb recurve shooting xx75 aluminums and 2 blade broad heads. Never shot a deer with that set up, but had several pass throughs on javelina.

I should also mention. PSE coumpounds one is 35# is 23" draw and 45# is 26" draw.

bowhntrmat, I never thought about using a 2 blade until I read another thread. I'm new at this myself but learning lots of great information here and anywhere else I can get it. I currently bought them some 100gr Muzzy's and Slick Tricks. I can certainly buy them the 2 blades but I wanted some good feedback on performance and penetration with those set ups.

For a kid I would maybe try the Rage. They are a good entry level broadhead for kids. I met an older guy a few weeks ago was swearing about his 85 grain head with short little lightweight arrows. I think it was a Rage or a Rage wanna be. He said Hoyt says you really have to get that speed going. I told him I use CE 350 Piledrivers with a 150 grain Samurai head. He kinda looked at me strange, which is nothing new. I like heavy arrows and 150 grains. To each his own. As long as you are killing animals go for it. I said killing not wounding. :-)

ok....now I'm confused. So you are saying to use a mechanical broadhead with their lower poundage bows? I keep reading about mech's not deploying at lower speeds.

Im not a Rage user. You are probably right, im sure others will chime in. I bet you can find some good 85 grain head that kids can be comfortable with. I saw where a lady with low pound bow shot a moose with a 85 grain. Complete pass through...so..... Others smarter than me will chime in. Thanks for getting the youngins shooting!! thats awesome!!

I'll take a look at the buzz cuts and the 40KE Rages. Anyone have an online calculator they use to find out KE?

Thanks elk. They are definitely excited. My daughter didn't have much interest until I bought her a bow. Now shes excited to go with me bow opener. She just turned 11 last month.

I would go with a good cut on contact head like a Magnus Stinger, Buzzcut or Razortrick (there are many other great cut on contact broadheads but those are the ones I have experience with).

                            These or Stingers.

My kids shoot 31 to 36 lbs. They have killed 6 hogs and have gotten 3 pass throughs on 60-100 lb sows. Spined 2 40-50 lb hogs and a 165 lb boar. All with 100 grain Stingers.
