    CNC Machining

So i started my company June 2012, and the first year went outstanding. Custom CNC Solutions is the name, we provide contract programming services to machine shops who need help in the programming department. either because of a bottleneck, sick or on vacation programmers, and the big one has been start up shops and those who are just entering into the computer controlled era of machining. It has really become more of a consulting type thing including many other aspects surrounding CNC machining. I have worked in various machine shops for the past ten years, working my way to management from the floor each time. I have a passion for smashing previous production times through tooling, fixturing, and PROPER programming. so many shops i have seen over the years could improve sometimes 300-400% with some simple changes. anyway, enough about me.

My goal is to come in, do what i do and leave. that way it doesn't become a long term expense for the shop I'm working at. I have done this many times over and now for some reason in the past two months my phone has stopped ringing. at the same time we had a sudden death in the family and some other medical problems which left me all but broke. not to mention i spent a solid month in Dickinson on a job and they decided they don't have to pay the 4k they owe me, and another in Tomball the same thing. I have never in my life been late on a payment for anything, and i just had capital one call wanting to know why i haven't paid. I feel like a deer in the headlights. if i don't get some work in this week i think i will have to shut down and go to work for another shop full time.

I truly believe my company provides an extremely valuable service to the machining community. My problem is im not a salesman, I'm the go-to guy who fixes the problems and figures out what others dont see. my work speaks for itself is how i feel, but now im stuck. HELP! what do i do?

First step is to get paid for work you've done, you already have all the advi e you need there. A good attorney is worth his/her weight in gold.

Second, try to come up with a way to 'license' your programs. If you go in and fix something that stays fixed forever you are going to put yourself out of business. You need a way to get paid for as long as the program is being used, or on a per piece basis.

The program you do needs to 'turn off' after a specified date or number of pieces.

I'd also consider selling the consumables that go into the machine. You can leverage those sales by offering your services and programs at lower rates.

I'm expanding my welding supply business to include machine shop consumables, it is pretty lucrative.

I'm a CNC programmer myself. I just started doing contract programming less than a month ago. If this doesn't work out for you, contacting might be an option. Shot me a PM if you want more information. What software do you use?

It seems we are in a lull right now. A couple of shops I talk to fairly regularly say they are slow. Ive been programming and running machines just over 20yrs. I bought a 2004 Leadwell V30 a couple of months ago for my shop at home and have the same issue as you. Im just not a salesman. Programming and running the parts is the easy part. Getting the work and doing the business related stuff is tough.

I have been hearing that most shops are slow right now. All of my guys are on 40 right now. I really hope it picks back up soon. I know a couple that are selling off machines.
