    Duck hunting newbies

My brother and I decided to give duck hunting a go this year. We've been a couple of times before. Though not with anyone who really knew what was going on. We ordered a dozen mallard decoys yesterday. So what's some pointers? We're really hoping to have some luck. We don't have a boat or ponds to hunt. So public hunting at the lake without a boat is our only option.

Where you at? That would help a little.

Where in NE Texas? I've got a good dog and lots of water to hunt.

I'm in paris, he is in Sherman. So Pat Mayse lake and Lake Texoma. Though I'm not sure how duck hunting goes on Texoma.

Can y'all wade out 20-30 yards from the shoreline to place y'all's set in, then comeback into some vegetation?

We lucked out and got the decoys on sale from Cabelas($30 for a dozen), and the budget is pretty stinking tight for this year. Not sure if We're going to be able to pull off waders.

You can get some waders relatively cheap at academy. They are a necessity, especially since you don't have a boat or dog.

If it comes down to it I've got a fishing pole and a rattle trap that will bring my birds in it. And cheap depends on the budget at the time. Right now budget is next to nothing. If I could I would get a boat and a dog, but this is what I have for now.

No help on the ducks but my dad worked in Paris when I was 13 . We carried stringers of stripers and sand bass from the spillway on pat Mayes lake .. Can you still walk down the spill way and fish ?

I hunt private on our family farm in Pittsburg. More than welcome to come join sometime. I will be hunting some with another fellow TBHer this year also thats in the area. Im sure we can put you on some birds and show you alot of the ins and outs.

One question. How do you plan on setting/picking up decoys without waders when its 20-30 degrees out in late season when the hunting is prime?

How are you gonna pick up your decoys without waders? If you don't have waders you might as well just deer hunt....unless you like wet wading in the winter.

Sure can, I've only been down there to fish once. I fish some on the intake side during the spring for channel cats.

Thanks for the offer, would e awesome if that worked out. I have a pretty jacked up work schedule, but I would definitely try.

The best idea I have on decoys right now is a cord system with a weight on the end that I can chunk. I know that's iffy, but if I can't pull off waders by then it's what I've got.
