So gout runs on both sides of my family tree and this branch finally experienced the joy of gout back in 1999. I get about one to two flares a year always in my big toe or in my ankle. I've been able to keep it in check through the magic of black cherry. Well, I had a slight flare up start during the opening weekend of dove season. I'm positive that the brisket, meat lover's pizza and more beer than water in 100 degree heat while wearing tight snakeboots had NOTHING to do with the flare up. Well, that wasn't too bad because I know how to deal with it. Last Sunday I experienced a FIRST........the gout hit my right elbow! Couldn't bend or straighten my right arm for a week. Had to wash my hair with one hand, eat left handed, and cleaning up after a number two was impossible! Not to mention I kept waking up in excruciating pain about every 30 minutes, that is when I could fall asleep. Haven't been able to shoot my bow for a week which is driving me crazy and I had to cancel a morning dove hunt on Thursday becuase I couldn't hold a shotgun.
Well, It's finally getting better now. I have a little more range of motion and swelling has gone down considerably. I just need to have it completely gone by October 3 which is supposed to be my first bow hunt weekend.
For those of you that have never had gout, especially in your elbow, you won't truly understand the pain. Let's just say I was really wanting to just cut the dang arm off between Monday and Thursday. That would have been MUCH less painful!
If gout runs in your family and you have not been stricken yet, watch your diet, keep your weight down, limit your alcohol use and stay hydrated. If you get it once, you've got it for life!
Sorry for the long read, just wanted to share my pain!!
