    Killing Bermuda Grass

does anyone know how to kill bermuda without killing St. Augustine? For some reason the bermuda has taken over my back yard the last couple of weeks. Everything I have read just says to use round up on the entire yard and start over but, I have to believe there is an alternative out there. Someone suggested letting the st augustine grow tall and hopefully shade out the bermuda?

Anyone ever been successful at this?

Keep it fertilized & watered. The st aug will overcome the bermuda.

battling it as well, and as posted, about all you can do is keep the st. augustine healthy and IT WILL choke out the bermuda, but it takes time...

Plant trees in your yard and the shade will wipe out a whole yard of bermuda.......at least mine did.

Let the bermuda grow tall and scalp it. The problem is that it will seed during this process. But you get more of the mother plant when mowing it down.

Start picking up the St. Augustine that is on the side of the road to plug in the bermuda infectation.

Water, fertilize and manucude the St. augustine, it will win in the end.

Some times it's better to kill it all and start over again. Roto till the soil, fertilize and seed the areas.

Roundup, there are cheaper generic products with the same glyoxylate chemical at the same concentration.

If you decide to spray it and start over:

A lot of places around Texas carry Eraser (generic Round Up). I use it quite a bit on fence rows and it works as good as (if not better than) Round Up. Read the the label though, it mixes a little bit different. I think it already has the surfactant in it.

St A will win out over Bermuda. You have to be patient. Its not a quick fix. I raised the blade on my mower to its highest setting and by the end of the year most of my Bermuda was gone.

Re-soding a yard is a lot of work and money. I'd rather spend my time and money on other things.

Thanks for the info. I think I am going to try raising the blade, water and fertilize and see what happens over time. Bermuda doesn't really bother me that much but, I would definitely like my St. A. back without killing the bank and my back.

If you are going to start over, get your hands on some ET herbicide and mix it with your roundup/generic glyphosate and you will have a hot mixture that will burn it all down to the nub.

Get a truckload of compost and spread it on your grass about 1/2" thick. Your St. Augustine will LOVE it and choke out the bermuda. Do it several years in a row and it also builds up the water absorption and your grass will be thick and healty and you can go longer without watering.

I don't know about the St. Augustine, but if you plant the bermuda in my yard it will DIE. Weeds grow just fine, but bermuda......
