Depends in when the rut occurs in your area. They aren't effective until the bucks become really territorial. I start mock scrapes during the pre-rut, when I start finding lots of scrapes. For us, that means Mid-November.

So, I've actually been reading about about this recently. One thing that stood out, the author wrote most hunters start scrapes too late. He recommended started scrapes mid to late Summer, July and August. Deer still use scrapes, year round. By starting scrapes too late in to the season, Deer have already started making their own, and make those scrapes their priority. I don't recall the author. I've never tried making scrapes myself, I just thought this made sense when I read it. I guess.... according to this author, start now!

Edit: Here's an article saying SPRING TIME!

Perhaps it's never really too early.

Belive it or not when I do a mock scrape,I will wizz on the soil a little bit,and bucks will actually smell it and paw at it.

I usually start a couple when I find a real one. I pee in them as well, and have some pics of bucks on them in a VERY short amount of time.

The article above is interesting, as are justhrowit's comments. I don't think I've ever seen a scrape in the woods between February and September, but good info.

Me too, I've peed in a scrape before I got into a stand and watched a buck freshen it up for 3-4 minutes

I freshened up an old one last year with my boot and then wizzed in it before I left for the week, put a camera on it just to see and sure enough had a decent size buck come in and check it out. Not saying it will or would work every time but I was surprised when I saw it on camera

I have been doing this for years. I have actually made some bucks furious. They come back and just tear the place up with scrapes and rubs.
I made one and put a camera over it. In less in a 12 hr period, I had 8 different bucks work it along with about a dozen of does. I was surprised at how many does came to that scrape.

I would think mid October I might start putting some out.
