    Scrape identity! Help

Took these pics today at our place in southwestern Mills county. No livestock in this pasture. It was made where three pastures come together with three different gates. Two people have said they have seen a small mountain in this area. Just curious if the cat did this or just what. Any ideas. There were two scrapes about ten feet apart. Anyone have an opinion?

Looks like turkey scraping the ground because of the distinct line pattern. Other than that, it almost looks man made. Dove hunters? I picture a kid or adult sitting there scraping the ground with a stick to pass the time. Is their a licking branch above that we can rule out deer?

Nothing around. Out in the open.

Normally a mountain llion will mark his territory with a straight line rather than a circle...

Ok, so not deer for sure. I am hesitant to say cat because normally you cannot see the lines...their paws just aren't built like that. Cats scratch for three reasons. To sharpen their claws (tree or couch :-)), bury or cover a kill, or to cover feces. Did you dig down a little and find a treat?

I still think turkey or human most likely explanation.

That's why I ask. Never have seen a mountain lion on our land in Mills county. Have no idea how males mark their territory. The lion was seen about 2 to 3 hundred yards from this scrape.

Just because you haven't seen one doesn't mean that their is not around...lion are secretive, and tend not to be seen. Their territory can be well over 100 miles....a male will make a mark to outline his territory, the direction of the mark is where they will head to...

Cats don't mark by scratching a circle in the ground, they mark by peeing on stuff. Which is why tomcats are a pain in the arse, they pee on everything that a dog can't get to.
