Shooting a Bow with a Broken Hand

Well, as some of you may remember, I broke my hand a few weeks ago. I wont get into it, but the bottom bone in my palm is broken, about an inch above the wrist.

I tried putting on a wrist strap release and shooting, but its incredibly painful. Unfortunately, I don't know if I'll be ready by the time the season rolls around.

Anyone got any ideas? My first thought was a crossbow... which I'm not so fond of, but I do own one. My second thought was a three finger thumb release.

I'd appreciate if anyone has gone through this and has any suggestions. This feels like Deja Vu, considering I messed up my shoulder in september last year and had to hunt all of October with a crossbow... this is a horrible feeling.

I can't imagine your wrist healing properly with you drawing back a bow. I would suck it up and use the crossbow "with a crank" and hope you don't get hurt again.

Come out to Cinnamon Creek and we'll let you try out some releases or whatever else we can help you with.

Find a "Ripshot" and try it. That device will take your wrist completely out of the equation when drawing. It puts all the pressure on your back muscles where it really should be. I have one if you would like to give it a try.

I had 3 broken bones in my right hand a couple of years ago and there was no way I could draw my bow until it was healed up. Fortunately for me, it was better by season opener. Doc told me that if I did anything to mess up the alignment of those bones, I would get surgery and pins, I didn't want that.

At Carenow to get it X-Rayed right now. Hopefully they don't recommend I get it sawed off or something!

I hate going to see the doctor...

If they saw it off have them install a release instead of a hook! . Hope all is well!

Had a "boxer fracture" a few years ago. Totally put me out until the end of season. Good Luck!

Take care of it or it will cost you more than 1 opener.

I had a dead bone in the lunate cluster, from a previous wrist injury. Doc had to go in and break my arm and take a bone graft with a vein attached and resupply blood to the dead bone. I lost 4 years of archery and have 2 huge scars now, but I can sling all the arrows I want now.

I burned my arm from over my elbow to my fingers about a week after I got a brand new bow. 1st and 2nd degree mostly. It got pretty bad in the crease of my elbow and wrist before it got better. I couldn't stand not to shoot. I went hog hunting a few times, and practiced very little. Thank god I didn't see anything, because it hurt pretty good to shoot and jacked my form all up.

Sorry that didn't help any. But I can relate. I would take up that offer on trying releases. I just picked up a 4 finger thumb release and couldn't hit a barn with it at first, but am really getting it dialed in.

Well, apparently if you were in an "altercation", Carenow will not treat any injuries related to it. Glad they informed me of that... 45 minutes after I waited to find out.

So now I'm up here at Baylor getting x-rays. Like my grandpa always used to say "relax... Things could be worse! And whadda ya know... They got worse."

Nearly every time I go to the doctor or ER for an injury, I tell them I crashed a golf cart. Usually I crashed a motorcycle, but don't tell them that because I'm sure it adds to a statistic somewhere.

Well they looked at it and told me exactly what I already knew - The 5th metacarpal is busted.

They tried to put a cast on me, but I informed them that I have an elk hunt that I am filming that I leave for on friday. (I am not shooting, couldnt afford the tag anyways) So I'm looking at 4-6 weeks before I can use a normal wrist release.

I have an old T-Handle Thumb release, but I hated it. I'm gonna take FishNdadio up on his offer to come by CCR and see what I can get done with 3 fingers after this elk hunt is done. Thanks for all the replies guys!
