    Ankle Fusion

Has anyone had to have their ankle fused? Looks like I will have mine done this coming Monday due to falling while hunting last December. I was just looking for some real life cases.. Thank in advance..

Has your orthopedic surgeon discussed the option of ankle replacement surgery ?

If you fuse the ankle, expect a 50% decrease in range of motion ..... You will have physical limitations

Ditto. I am two and half years post op from an ankle replacement (Dr. Bloome Fondren Orthopedic in Houston). You have to ask for it and they may say no, too heavy, smoke, too young. A fusion is terminal procedure, I.e. they don't have to see you again. But, the ankle wants to move, so now end up with knee and hip problems or arthritis in other parts of your foot that are now flexing when they didn't before. I have the STAR ankle and my only regret is that I didn't do it five years earlier.

I have seen several doctors and all have stated I am not a canidate for the replacement. I was just curious if anyone else has had the fusion surgery. Thanks for your comments.

Update... Started PT today after my ankle fusion surgery. Heck yes it is painful streatch all those unused muscles etc. back out but got to get back on my feet. Doc said fusion looks great and alignment is best he has seen. Im just wanting to walk again.. All treestand hunters please use a fall restraint device. Yes, I had mine on but had some other issues happening. I probably would not be much good if I did not have it on..

Good luck with your rehab and get well soon! It will be a long road to recovery, but like you said it could have been a lot worse!

My moms is fused and she has 0% movement in here ankle. 3 wheeler accident, compound fracture in her leg, 14 surgeries later and still can't get it the same.
