I was wondering what the GS brain trust thoughts were on open carry? My wife told last night on the local news there was going to be an open carry "march" I believe this weekend. Didnt know if any of the east Texas folks knew anything about it?

Open Carry March In Longview

Let em march til there feet fall off. I am all for our rights but sometimes I wonder what it's true purpose really is to continue these marches. I know that many who reply will have a very reasonable response to that. I say go for it and exercise your right. I think that what is trying to be accomPlished is showing people that they can open carry, but the other side of that is those who already have a phobia of guns this will not make them feel any easier. There has been tons of debate on here over this issue. Both sides have valid points.Last edited by hoythunter28; 08-30-2013, 08:21 AM.

To tell ya the truth I am on the fence on this one and here's why.....if there are sevral people who are eating dinner somewhere and a bad guy comes in and see these people sitting there with guns then maybe he will rethink what he was gonna do. On the other hand if there is open carry you leave yourself open to get gun jacked or even worse what if two people who are both open carrying get into an argument over who's gun is bigger or better. They start shooting it out and then everyone else who is carrying want to get into the fight. I know that there are sensible and reansonable people on here and none of us would do something so dumb. But there is always that one person who will be that dumb. So yeah it has its good points and bad and I think that we need to look at both sides before we rush to judgement. I'd like to open carry, just for the convienience of it. I've always heard the argument of getting gun jacked or that you'd be targeted as the first person shot. Anyone have any examples to support those claims?
I've experianced open carry in Arizona and it always seemed to make folks a lot more polite. And that was for the folks that even noticed.

The argument that you will be the first target because you are openly carrying is proven false everyday, there are numerous states which currently allow citizens to open carry their side arm, how many news reports do we hear of an individual who was open carrying getting gunned down? We don't. It is a deterrent. If it wasn't a deterrent I believe we would hear of many more instances where we could at least surmise someone was shot because they were openly carrying their sidearm.
It is the same argument that was made in Texas before the right to carry became legal, it's going to be the wild west now that everyone has a pistol, once again there was not and is not any evidence to support the claim.

I think the open carry marches are for long guns which coincidentally are already legal to not conceal.
For that reason i think that there is the potential to do more harm than good. It is like saying that I am going to drink a beer just to prove that it is legal to drink a beer. I do not see the point of bringing attention to something that we already have. It is bringing attention to a percentage of the public that does not know that long guns are legal. You can bet that there will now be a push in 2015 to put long guns in the same category as handguns and make them have to be concealed. It may not work but why fight a fight that has already been won?

We can sit and play the what if game until our ears fall off, but the simple facts show that states that allow open carry and concealed carry have much lower violent crime rates than those that prohibit the lawful carrying of a sidearm. And when it comes to the decision of whether to carry concealed or open, leave it to the individual to decide what is right for themselves and not legislate them out of the option. I respect the opinions of guys who do not want to open carry, but their opinions are not enough to justify telling me how to protect myself

I'm for open carry here in Texas. People who are scared of guns will in time pay no mind to people carrying openly. It would also allow the sheep to see that people that carry are no threat, and responsible citizens. If you choose to get your CHL and actually carry I feel you should aim to carry a high percentage of the time. Concealed carry at times makes it hard to carry and doesn't allow me to carry the weapon I'm most confident and proficient with. I can carry my Ruger LCP pretty much all the time, but I'd much rather have a .45acp strapped to my side. Allow responsible law abiding citizens the opportunity to choose how they want to carry.
