Starting Sept 1st $5.00 dollars a tail, up from the $2.00/tail Bounty
HAYS COUNTY, Texas (KXAN) - Hays and Caldwell Counties want to get tougher on feral hogs -- and they're willing to pay the price.
Plum Creek Watershed coordinators announced that both counties are going to raise the bounty for hogs this year from $2 to $5.
The bounty is set to go into place beginning this Sept. 1.
In many areas across the state where the hogs are increasing in numbers, damage to crops, livestock, pets, landscaping, and natural habitat in rural and urban areas are noticeable.
According to the Plum Creek Watershed , the feral hogs also have the potential to contribute to water pollution. Due to their numbers, distribution, and behavior, feral hogs can increase the levels of sediment, nutrients, and bacteria in streams and lakes. In some situations, water quality may become so degraded that it cannot support recreation or aquatic life.
Texas Agriculture statistics show that statewide last year more than 7,100 were killed through the bounty program. It's estimated feral hogs in Texas destroy property and crops to the tune of $500 million every year.
