Light weight WIND PROOF layer??? Let's discuss it...

Well, with season coming upon us let's discuss light weight WIND PROOF layers, not wind resistant items....

I am in need of a good layer that will STOP wind.... I already have a good outer layer that keeps me plenty warm and base layers that wick but neither of these offer much for wind and I have found in the past hunting the midwest that the wind can be brutal...

I have seen several light weight options that state they are wind resistant but I don't want wind resistant...

Figured I would turn to the GS to see what you Guys / Gals have found that will STOP the wind and again this will need to be a light weight mid layer, nothing bulky...

    Go...

Filson oiled jackets - they are water and wind resistant.

Wore this stuff in Washington State - winds, rain, snow and temps running 20 - 45 everyday.....dry and warm.

Filson unfailing goods are made with the best materials and craftsmanship. Building a legacy of quality and durability since 1897.

A lot of it is going to depend on what your def on light weight is

In my opinion there is not such thing as light weight clothing that is wind PROOF

Heck they can barely make big heavy coats that are wind PROOF

I have the "windpoof" Redhead 1856 Fleece set from Basspro and combined with a good set of heavy base layer/under armour tights I can't feel wind at all (talking about Texas temps/wind) but in my opinion I would not consider the 1856 Fleece "light weight"

I understand, I have the TBH predator fleece for an outer layer and it is warm, seldom wear it hunting in Texas... But it is not completely wind PROOF.. I hate to buy another outer layer, as I would really like to be able to use a mid weight wind PROOF layer by itself in early season..

I wear wind proof fleece vests hunting in Colorado as one of my layers. They work wonders up in the mountains there don't seem to do much for me in Texas.

I would compare my redhead 1856 fleece to the Predator fleece, except I have the windproof version which is lined with a heavy liner on the inside to keep the wind from making it through. I have never worn it by itself without base layers under it so I honestly could not tell you if it is as "windproof" by itself as it is with base layer under it. I can tell you that I have hunted in some COLD,windy stuff here in North Texas in it and not felt the wind at all. I would still consider it a heavy outershell instead of a "mid-weight" though even though it is not bulky at all like a big heavy weight coat would be

Windstopper by Gore-tex. Works great and is available to many jackets, pull overs just about anything. I have a pull over that is only the windstopper material that is extremely light weight. It was made by OR (outdoor research). Don't just look at hunting related product, search backpacking and hiking products. They are just not camo!

I have one of these, and it is AWESOME.

Patagonia Men's Nano Puff® Pullover - Windproof and water-resistant, the Nano Puff Pullover is made with warm, incredibly lightweight, highly compressible 60-g PrimaLoft® One insulation. Ideal as an insulating layer or outerwear in cold climates.

Unbelievably light weight. VERY warm and windproof. It needs to be fairly cold before you can wear it actually. You don't want to wear it on a 55 degree morning in Texas unless a damp wind is blowing pretty hard or something. You don't want to wear it if you're hiking a lot unless it's COLD. But for sitting in a treestand in cold weather (or a football game or whatever), it's the bomb. I wear it underneath whatever camo I need outside - anything from a thin camo shell to my Cabela's berber fleece jacket. You can layer other stuff underneath the Puff jacket as well if it's really REALLY cold.

Predator fleece has a wind barrier, not wind proofing. Hold it over your face, and you can breath through it. you'll sufficate trying that with windstopper.

Something like this should work great, but I would not use it as a baselayer. I would get it large enough to fit over everything but your outer shell. Just go to any store, Cabelas, Dicks or anywhere that sells outdoor clothing, find something with Windstopper and try and breath through it. You'll see right away that's what your looking for.

WINDSTOPPER® gloves by GORE-TEX LABS provide totally windproof, reliably breathable, and water-resistant protection. Versatile protection and incredible comfort for your hands.
