Surface Material For Dog Run

We have two french bulldogs (about 25lbs each). They have access to a small portion of our fenced yard while we are at work via a doggy door. Problem is, this part of the yard is really shaded and they love to run around when it is nice. The combination killed all of the st augustine we put down for them. What is an alternative? Doesn't have to be grass. We have thought rock, astroturf type materials, really anything. I just don't know what would be best.

Alot of kennels use pea gravel drains good and easy to pick up waste.

Thanks Jimmy. That is the front runner so far. Yard is on a pretty good slope, but I think a few landscape timbers to anchor it would work.
