    4wd question

when buying a 4wd atv, utv or truck, is there any way to actually test the 4wd and prove the front wheels actually pull?

4wd on dry pavement should "pull" when turning.

Yep. Put it in 4, turn the wheel all the way, and try to drive. You'll know if its working or not. It'll squeal the tires, be hard to turn, and put the driveline in a bind. You'll know for sure.

if you can nose up to a tree,,, line the bumper up with the frame not center with the license plate!!!! slip it into 4x4 and give it a little gas,, the tires should break loose fairly easy,,,,

but don't use a tree in parking lot!!!

Or do that backwards with a chain or strap with the hitch and pull on the tree.

I think you'd be hard pressed to get me to let you try to push on a tree with a vehicle I'm trying to sell.

Turning on pavement will do the trick

When you turn hard in 4x4 it will hop.

Hard ground, pavement...Put it in 4x4, turn the wheel MOST of the way, very LITTLE throttle is all that is needed, and you will feel the power trying to escape through the path of least resistance; that SHOULD be a front tire trying to “break-loose”. You can hear this action taking place, as well as feeling a jerking motion in the steering wheel and a hopping motion in the vehicle itself. The reason this takes place is as the vehicle turns, the inner wheel and outer wheel will turn at different speeds (inner goes slower then outer).

                * It is unwise to crank the wheel all the way and use much throttle on HARD ground…even hard dirt. You very well may end up finding the wink link is some “hard-part" grenading itself.

Agreed. I should've mentioned not to floorboard it. Thought that was a given. Can't be so sure

On a atv I just jack all 4 wheels off the ground. Dont know much about a truck.

Pull up to a curb put in 4x4 and it should easy over the curb without spinning the rear tires.

Engage 4 low, apply brakes and accelerate. If rear wheels spin, 4wd is not working.

Maybe try it in 2wd first for a base line?

Dan very few vehicles are true 4X4s... Most are 1 front wheel and 1 back wheel. If you want a real one get a Toyota.
