    Gator hook and line question

Two of my boys were drawn for a youth alligator hunt at Gus Engeling and I had a couple of questions about setting up a hook and line. I have the materials I think I need (12/0 single hook, 440 lb test tarred trot line for leader, and 40 ft of rope). My question is, what type of knot should I use to tie the leader to the rope, and do I double the leader for added strength, and if so, what is the best way to do that. Also, would I use an improved clinch knot on the hook, or what is the best knot there. I am new to the lizard hunting, and just want to do it right so me and my boys stay safe. Any info is appreciated.

lose the trot line get a steel leader 440 isnt big enough unless u want a small gator

Thanks for the leader tip. I'll look into getting some steel leader. I was just going by the components list supplied by TPWD, which says 3 to 6 foot of leader (300 lb test twine). I thought I was doing good by going with the 440 lb, but I am new to this, so don't really know anything.

the 440 is ok for smaller gators but the smaller they are the harder they fight and there quick

What you have is plenty..if they are jawl hooked, your hook will straighten before the line breaks..double your twine leader and you will be fine...
