I think that I put in close to 300' of 1" and have great pressure at the far end if I don't have something running in between it and the well. I wish now that I had buried more when I had the trencher rented. Hind sight is 20/20

You probably only have a 3/4" meter. Anything larger than 1" is wasting your money. Pipe size is about volume, not pressure. You will have the same pressure with 1/2" or 6".

uh....it depends on how many openings (faucets, bath tub, etc.) you have on the other end that are being used. If your sprinkler system is running and your wife is trying to take a shower and your kid is playing in the bathroom jacking with the faucet on and off....your gonna get your butt chewed by your wife about the time your dishwasher kicks on. Have someone size it for you that knows what they are doing.
You'll probably be fine with hose bibs around your barn or shed but make sure you have enough line size running to a residence. The farther you run from the source, the less pressure you will have when all of the outlets are running simultaneously.

As an irrigator, here are my thoughts.

It depends on the size of your water meter...if you have a 5/8" meter, then you can pull about 12 gals per minute and you'd want 1" if you hooked in close to the water meter. Most plumbers, however, only run 3/4" schedule 40 to your house with that size meter, so if you're tapping in close to the house, there's no reason for the larger piping. Don't put in 1/2" because you'll only be able to pull out so many gallons thru the pipe without damage, and you'll likely have poor pressure if you're running more than 1 source of water.

For a 1" meter, I'd put in 1 1/4" or possibly 1 1/2" to maximize flow. Don't go to HD or Lowe's for pipe. 400' is pretty cheap if you go to a local supply house and the pipe will have joints already built in.
