Lt Gov makes a call to APD

Don't have the full story but NBC5 just played a conversation that identified himself as David Dewhurst and wanted to get a family member out of a shoplifting charge.

    This could get good.

Texas Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst personally called a police sergeant soon after a relative was arrested for shoplifting and asked about getting her out of jail, Allen Police said. The relative, Ellen Bevers, an Allen elementary school teacher, was jailed and charged with shoplifting at a Kroger’s grocery store on Aug. 3, police said. Bevers is married to Dewhurst’s nephew, police said. In an unusual move, police released an audio recording of the phone call late Wednesday. “What I would like to do, if you would explain it to me, sergeant, what I need to do is to arrange for getting her out of jail this evening and you can proceed with whatever you think is proper,” Dewhurst said on the call. Dewhurst had called the main Allen Police phone number and asked to call to the senior officer. He was connected to the on-duty sergeant, police said.

I would of done the same thing, and he did not ask for the charges to be dropped - JUST what can we do to get her home.

Yep. Article said he asked what to do to get her out that night and even stated he asked the sgt to follow normal protocol with the case.

Don't really understand why this is even a news story.

I would think the APD respects his concern but probably had issue's with him trying to influence the dept by calling them and even stated in the recording that someone from DPS would be calling them in 10 minutes after his conversation. I would assume that's one reason they turned over the recording to the media.

I would think it would be pretty easy to post bond for his niece,or am I missing something?

She was/is at CCSO by this point. Normally they go up there rather quickly after they are taken to the dept. She would have to bond out at county not APD. A LT Gov would prob know this so im also wondering if he is ONLY asking what to do to bail her out. Interesting none-the-less

I don't see anything improper in the quoted portions of the story.

Nothing improper in the posted story but in the phone conversation might be considered improper. How many people do you know that will make a call to the DPS if you were going to bail the person out?

Dewhurst asked to speak to judge or sheriff. What family member does that and why wouldn't he just call the CC jail if he wanted to post bond to get member released?
I'm not the political type but seems he's trying to throw his influence around here.

Not to mention that he was having the director of DPS call them. Lol who does that?

Media is just reporting on an open records request.

If you dont have the full story, then why would you post this? Causing drama. And I am told that I cause drama.

                              LOL!!!

Most people would do the same thing. Try to get a loved one out of the gray bar hotel that night. Not asking for charges to be dropped, just want the loved one home.
