    Shot location on Axis?

Im headed to the Diamond C next weekend in hopes of a fat axis doe, or a texas dall, but Im leaning towards the axis for meat and a nice tanned hide for the wall. Is shot location on these critters the same as whitetail?

Their vitals are a little more forward than a whitetail.

NOT behind the shoulder. Try for about 4" back from the front edge of the shoulder.

forward and lower, the spine dips lower than on a whitetail.

sounds like a quartering away shot is best fit for them.

Yep. The diaphram is about even with the crease at the back of the shoulder. All the vitals are between the shoulder blades.

I learned this the hardway on a rifle shot. I shot one with a 270 at about 90 yards and the darn thing ran off. We actually found her about 60 yards away. Scary feeling at the time because i was invited on a hunt. Later on a couple of the pros there told me where I should of aimed. BTW- that was the last time I fired a gun at an animal. Been bow only ever since.

Good luck and take lots of pictures.

Being that they are grazers and not browsers like white tailed deer, they have much larger stomachs for all the grasses they eat. This causes their vitals to be farther forward. IMO I'd say put it right through the shoulder blade if broadside, instead of behind it like normal
