I have a 96 Chevy z71. On the way to the lease two weeks ago while driving it starting jumping out of 2h into neutral. Then it wouldn't even stay in 2h unless you held your hand on it. Now it will only run in 4L. I know it's probly something with the transfer case. But any ideas on what exactly, how hard/expensive of a fix is it.

Have you looked under the truck to make sure its not just a linkage problem? The transfer case is fairly easy to get out of those trucks with a few basic tools, but I wouldnt tear into the case itself unless you know what youre doing. There are about a million little bearings, springs and gears in there that will go everywhere if youre not careful.

Also on that model, I'm pretty sure that even though your transfer case has the floor shifter instead of the pushbutton, the transfer case still has an electronic actuator. I had a 97 z71 with the floor shift and it went out on mine, though not the same symptoms. Mine simply wouldn't "transfer" into 4wd...
