4k for that!?! Must have stole the unit to make a profit....there is simply no way. No way....and three bids with in 500$!?!? I wouldn't start my truck up for a 4k system wouldn't cover equipment and material let alone a gallon of fuel. Ild love to see this jokers proposal or invoice you got a smokin deal bro!

I just went an looked and the return is a 20 x 20 and when I take the filter out the return opening into the unit is just as big as the filter all the way into the unit. Heck I could probably crawl in there. I couldn't tell what size the supply lines are but they seem to be pretty big.

Man...I am not sure how I got put on trial here I was just trying to help the op with his question based upon what I paid a while back. I did ask the wife to see what she recalled and she said from what she remebered the bids were 4,200, 4,700 and 5,100. So that would make two bids within 500 and the third at 900 more than the lowest.

I feel you. I fight the same fight in the welding and fabrication business. Unfortunately now a days customers tend to look at price first over quality, service, etc and they end up learning the hard way. Heck I guess I feel into the same trap but so far it has performed with no issues. Yall have scared the heck out of me cause I have two units downstairs (3 & 3.5 ton) that are 14 years old and when one of them needs replacing I want to consolidate the two units into one big unit. Currently I have three units for my house and my light bill gets quite expensive during the summer months.

3 and a 3.5 ton combined? Residential systems are only up to 5 ton more units the better as you can control parts of the house you want too. Just get some high eff and your bill will drop compared to 14 yr old 10/8seer units

What is a ball park $$$$
                  Thanks ahead of time.
IMHO since you are obviously wanting to go high efficiency I would go ahead and spend an extra 1k to 2k and get a SEER rating over 20.

Right now the two best units I've benchmarked are the Carrier Infinity System and the Lennox Dave Lennox Signature Series with the IComfort control System.

If you go with a Top Notch contractor that is going to do a professional install (hanging with uni-strut and all thread, all new drains, new plenums, duct work, electronic air purification system, and the whole 9 yards) you are looking to spend around 13k to 15k. I could be off a little on the price. Send a PM to EllisCountyHog here on TBH. I'm sure he can give you a better insight as to what you might expect on price. His company sells and installs high efficient systems daily. Plus, he's extremely knowledgeable when it comes to "professional" installs. I've seen his companies work. They are top notch.

The Lennox and Carrier systems run at 21 SEER. If it's installed the "CORRECT" way it will eventually pay for itself in the long run. Plus your house will have greater re-sale value or be more appealing to a buyer in case you ever decide to sell.

Personally I prefer the Lennox over the carrier but both are extremely nice. The Lennox just seems to be built with better quality. The Carrier seemed to have a lot more plastic (breaking parts) than steel and sheet metal. Also, the Lennox IComfort control system is much more (homeowner) user friendly.

                  Good luck.

Thanks for all the input guys. I am totally confused now on what I am getting and what I really need simply because I'm not an AC guy.
Some days you are the Bird and some days you are the Worm.
Got to see how this one shakes out.

Thanks Pickles really appreciate it when someone else in the industry compliments us.

Yazoo, as Pickles stated you can buy the best unit on the market but when not installed "properly" you might as well have bought the cheapest and would have the same results. Most installers have no idea how to read a manufactures charge chart on a unit and properly charge a unit using there recommended method which is how they rate each units seer ratings. A properly hung indoor unit is just as important. I can go into detail of how we instruct our guys to do this for you to check on. As far as recommendations as Pickles has stated for the money it is hard to beat a Lennox "dave lennox series". As far as pricing it is to difficult for "ME" to even ballpark due to all the unkowns and how each job is different. But I don't see it being below $10k for what you are wanting.
