It was working but slowly quit sending to gmail no issues with other emails

Don't mean to hijack but yet another reason why I find it hard to like iPhones. For all they do, there are so many things they won't do!

What does that mean? You can't use the email app of the phone to retrieve your Gmail?

Yes you can, as I do. I have however experience the problem you are referring to. If you use the Gmail App this may happen and you have to log out of the account and log back in. Problem solved. I have only had the problem one time in 6 months.
