If I'm Gonna hunt in the heat I make sure I have EVERYTHING I need to clean the hog. Knives, rope, gambrel, ice chest with ice, etc. I like to get them on ice in an hour or less. Size wise, I eat them all, on the bigger ones, I'll soak them in an ice chest with ice and lemon juice, draining the water daily and adding ice as needed for 2-3 days.

Without a doubt a larger boar gets more "rank" in the summer. Doesn't mean its not worth eating. Clean it asap and let it bleed out. It'll be fine.

X2 I will not clean a boar or sow in the summer time unless I have ice and cooler on hand, and I can shoot it and get it quartered up. I wont eat boars over 100 usually in any weather I think they are all rank. I prefer a 50-80 sow on a cold day. Personal preference my Dad will eat em year round depending on size.

Take them & eat them anytime. Just get them iced down soon in the heat.

I eat them all and at any time of year. They all make great sausage.

if its really hot and tons of fleas/ticks on the under side I will simply cut right down the spine, and "butterfly" it. I will ATLEAST get the straps out of it.

                        its worth it!

1 hour to cooler, is that from the shot, or after you recover? I'm hunting public land, with at least a 30 minute walk back to my truck. let's say I got it skinned and quartered within an hour or so of the shot, then had to hike out the quarters before I got them on ice, do you still think the meat would be good? I guess there is only one way to find out. I 've also been considering getting a game cart and pulling in a cooler, but that would add to my already heavy load.
