crossbows and bows aren't the same experience. If you've gun hunted before you'll be underwhelmed by it.
go to archery talk and read the nuts and bolts of archery. Then check in your area or nearby areas for a proshop to let someone set you up.
then you'll need to practice like crazy and keep learning a lot about bows including tuning, maintenance, sighting in, form yadda yadda.. There is a lot to them.
THENNN you can start worrying about a lease. There are a TONNN of bow only weekend leases for like $200/night. No guarantee, but its a commitmentless approach..
There are also public lands but not as many as in other states so you might have to travel to them.
half the battle to archery hunting is the bow the other half is getting a shot on a deer.. Unknown lands make that 10x harder. The biggest battle is not getting busted by the deer.. that takes practice and patience as well..
Your wife will need to go through the same exercises if she wants to get into it.
Xbow and bow are completely different though..
edit also i'd start a new topic about your specific subject or others will just read the first post and respond since this is an old thread.Last edited by DeadEyeB; 11-14-2013, 07:28 PM.

Don't forget to check out the local bowyers for traditional bows as well, www.sarrelsarchery.com for example. Bob will let you shoot all of his bows and help point you in the right direction for what you may want long term.
