I posted this on another website but thought it would be beneficial to post here as well.
Sometime in the early morning hours of Saturday 8/3/13 resident whitetail deer were poached off of state property at Sea Center Texas, 300 Medical Drive in Lake Jackson. The buck(s) were a common sight around the state fish hatchery and marine aquarium. One of them was quite the specimen and has been a pleasure to watch mature over the past couple of years.
There is a herd of about 25-30 deer that live at the hatchery and adjacent Dow Chemical property. For the past couple of weeks the resident deer have been hanging out near the staff/volunteer entrance in the front of our facility. We assume that this behavior is an attempt to catch whatever breeze is available and get away from the intense mosquito population/infestation that is prevalent in other areas of the property. Often times the deer would walk through the open staff/volunteer entrance gate and seek refuge in the front parking lot.
In summary, here is what we know:
(1) The two bucks in the pictures were sighted in the front parking lot by Sea Center Texas staff at 11pm on Friday night.
(2) The deer(s) were taken with a crossbow (we found two crossbow bolts).
(3) We have not seen the two deer in the pictures since Friday night.
(4) Two significant blood trails were found on the concrete of the parking lot early Saturday morning.
(5) There was a large amount of blood pooled up in front of the staff entrance gate where the deer was likely trying to make his final attempt to escape.
(6) The mature buck (we called him “Big Boi”) was still in velvet. The smaller buck was no longer in velvet.
I am sure that someone in the Brazosport area knows something. If you see any pictures of this deer floating around the internet or have any information on this violation, please contact Operation Game Thief or TPWD La Porte communication office (281) 842-8100. Rest assured local TPWD game wardens and LEOs are on the case. Please help us catch the responsible individual(s). Thank you.
