Need a new grill after fire, need advice.

I woke up at 6:45 Saturday morning to work my part time job like most Saturdays. We had 16 yards to mow before 2:00 to ensure my buddy could make it to a wedding that evening. It was so hot out there in the sun. When I finally finished I made it back home and jumped in the shower. All I wanted was a cold beer and to BBQ some chicken fajitas. I warmed up my propane pit and threw a family sized pack of fajita meat on the grill. Stepped inside to get a drink and start the beans. Went right back inside and the fire was raging almost to the porch overhang! I turned off the burners and tried to pull the pit away from the house but that singed the hair off my wrist so I grabbed some gloves and moved it in the middle of the yard. Wife called the fire dept since we were unprepared and do not own a fire extinguisher. They politely put out the fire and told us to enjoy a night out to dinner.

The pit is pretty much toast and I have been wanting to get another anyway. Looking into charcoal instead of propane. Not looking to break the bank either. Any recommendations?

If you're thinking charcoal, I don't think you can beat an Old Smokey. About $50 and can cook about anything on it. For propane, I always just get the cheap ones for around $100. They last about 3 years and get a new one. I've have a couple nicer ones and both only lasted about 2 years each.

I was thinking about a "smoker" pit like one from tractor supply around $150.

          Might be good, around $300.

My parents have always bought the New Braunfels brand at Academy and have never had a complaint. We keep a cover on it when we're not using it and its still in perfect shape. I believer we've had our current one for at least 8 years now.

The New Braunfels brand has gone down-hill quality wise since they were bought out by another company. I looked at one at Academy in San Marcos this weekend and it is too lightweight for me. Doesn't look like it would make it through a single season.

Exactly right. Very thin metal on them now.

look at Buccees, those are some properly made pits. (price shows it though)

Sending you a PM and an offer.

** Also Tractor Supply in C.S. had a smoker on Clearance $125 or so, normally $250, was good sized.
