Here's "Wilson" (named after the volleyball in the movie Castaway). This is the biggest one we've found so far, measuring about 3" wide by 4" long. It's just a big hunk of clay that gets so heavy that it pulls the tip of the tail off. Usually it's just hair sticking out of the end, but sometimes we find some hide attached too. I'd say we find 'em on less than 1% of the hogs shot, as well as on the ground near feeders.

I found one of these tail "mudballs" on a hog I killed this evening.
Does anybody know how this forms?
