17 year old kid just fell in my front door.

I got home from the office late tonight and was laying in bed talking to my wife when we heard a loud crash and someone yelling "help me!" I ran to the front door thinking it was my brother, who lives with us, and found my front door open and a kid on his knees across my threshold. I ran up to him and pushed him outside and slammed the door and held it shut. I yelled for my wife to bring her keys and phone. We have a large panel of light switches by the front door so I turned on every switch which lights up the front of the house like Christmas. Amber brought me keys so I could lock the door. After locking, I ran to get a pair of shorts and a pistol. Told Amber to call 911 and stay back. I looked out the front window and he's laying on his side exactly how he landed when i pushed him and I notice a blood stained rag in his hand. Hes crying for help so I open the door and instruct Amber to lock the door behind me. He's got a big gash on his neck and he's talking to someone on his cell phone. Kid says he's 17 and he just wants to die. I asked what happened to his neck he told me he did it to himself and that he just wanted to kill himself. There wasn't any major bleeding but I get him to put his rag on his neck and hold it tight. Checked his pulse. It was fast but strong. Asked him who he was talking to he said it was his brother in Tennessee. I get on the phone and brother tells me the kid is on all kinds of meds and ran from parents an hour or so prior threatening suicide. Deputies arrive and tell me they have been searching for him for an hour or so. Medics arrive a couple minutes later and cart him off.

While I was talking with one of the deputies I made some comment about I hope this doesn't end up in the Montgomery county police reporter. He smirked and said it was too late for that. Police reporter guy was apparently already on scene. I look for it in the morning I guess.

I'm sure this is reading like rambling but my mind is racing and my fingers can't keep up. Anyway, I'll be saying some thankful prayers for God helping me keep a level head through all of this. Had i panicked, this could have ended very badly. My wife is freaking out blaming herself for forgetting to lock the door and so on. A few prayers for comfort for her would be appreciated.
    Crazy night.

I cant say i wouldnt have shot him depending on the circumstances...good on you for eliminating the threat by pushing him out the door and locking it. It at least gave you time to come up with a plan. You never know he could have been full of crap and as soon as you approached him you get bum rushed by 3 more. Either way good job. Im sure you will get plenty of monday morning quarterbacking by plenty on this subject! lol

Sounds like you did the right thing.

In a situation like that I feel like I would always secure my family first. Then worry about helping.

Getting him out of your house was a very solid decision.

Prayers sent and job well done. Also prayers sent for the young man. He must be going through very troubling times of his own for him to want to end his own life.

I was thinking the same thing. We had a guy that had either smoked some bath salts or was on LSD (he stated LSD but I've never seen a violent bad trip like he was on). Officer was rolling down the road and a kid crossed right in front of him and looked distressed, he asked the kid, "you ok?", the kid jumped on the hood with his rear making a dent in the hood and said, "f-yeah I'm ok mother %^&*!!!!" Medics arrived and tried to sedate him but it didn't work, he went to the puzzle factory involuntarily.

Sadly, that's a typical night. What's a weird encounter to a citizen is just the next call for some.

Just be glad that you responded instead of reacting. You probably saved his life!! If you would have been trigger happy.... that paper would have had quite a different story.

Great job staying calm and collected...

Good work! Prayers up for you all. Nothing worse than taking a life, but right under it is the feeling you get when you think you might have to. Take care buddy!
